About me

My name is Jan van Steenbergen. I was born and raised in the Netherlands. On a professional level, I am a Polish-Dutch translator and interpreter, a journalist and an expert on Eastern Europe. Among my other passions is language creation. From 1997 onwards I have been a freelance translator; in that capacity, I worked for the Translation Centre of the Organs of the European Union (Luxemburg), the Publication Office of the European Communities (Luxemburg), and Translavic BV.

As a Poland expert, I have participated in several public debates, written many articles, etc. Since 2007 I am a member of the board of editors of the magazine Ablak. Besides, I have some considerable experience in the ICT: in the years 2001-2007 I worked as a programmer (Cool:Gen, Advantage:Gen, COBOL) for ABN-Amro Bank in Amsterdam.

Education, qualifications

Universiteit van Amsterdam: East European Studies (cum laude). The title of my thesis was: "The Ukrainians in Poland as a factor in Polish-Ukrainian relations" (2007).

Government Examination Translator/Interpreter Polish-Dutch (1997).

Warsaw University: Eastern European and Central Asian Studies (1994).
